How tough are you? The 4Cs of Mental Toughness

Situations put us through a variety of feelings. Some situations produce the best in us, some the worst. It is difficult for our minds to react optimally for each, after all, we are born with or develop our own inhibitions as we charter our way through life.

Being mentally tough has a lot of benefits. It makes you more resistant to adversity and helps you deal with situations with ease. In this article, we will delve deeper into the 4Cs that are defined as a barometer of strong mental health.

So the 4Cs are actually personality traits. These traits are different ways to gauge how you react, how you feel, how you process and how you react and in general.

  • Control
  • Commitment
  • Challenge
  • Confidence

Control

Control as the word suggests means how much ‘control’ you have over a situation. Does a situation get the better of you? Do you give in to urges that provide no real benefit to you. Obviously, you divide your daily routine into work and recreation. In your normal situations, you practice balance. However in certain situations. When adversity strikes, one seeks refuge in the easy event though it might distance him/her from the right. You lose control.

On the other hand, a mentally tough person will continue to maintain the balance despite short term variances of emotion or adversities. These can be the so called high EQ people who are somewhat resistant to negative stimulus. They are on the other side, the positive end of the scale of control.

Commitment

This measures how focussed one can be to the ‘desirable output’ that everyone designs for himself or herself. This can also be called a high sense of dedication. Sticking to the goals that you set for yourself, despite all the distractions and other inhibitors. A person who is easily swayed away from his goals performs poorly on this count.

On the other hand, one who stays diligently focussed on his gaols has high commitment score.

Challenge

A person willing to push his limits and go that extra mile to achieve the goals set. The other interpretation is such a person sees an opportunity in risk and doesn’t back down easily. A high score on the challenge front indicates a resilient, optimistic and opportunistic (in a positive sense) person . A low score indicates a person who plays it safe and gives in to difficult situations and challenges

Confidence

This indicates a belief in one’s abilities to achieve the desired output.  Trust and faith in your abilities to do something is an essential step to success and attaining the desired state that you set for yourself.

People tend to exhibit one or more of these traits time and against a person who is able to mobilise most of this over long stretches of time is mentally tough, as per the 4 Cs model.
